Pumpkin Exploration
Day one: Put both pumpkins in sensory table with magnifying glasses and rulers so that the children could look, touch, smell, explore. Some wanted to pick up to see how heavy they were. Day two: We left one pumpkin in the sensory table with a bucket of soapy water and small paintbrushes, big paintbrushes, and toothbrushes so the kids could wash our pumpkin. The second pumpkin was at another table with hammer, nails, and googles so the kids could pound the nails into the pumpkin (work on those arm muscles). Day three: We cut open a pumpkin after talking about the rind, pulp, seeds. The kids were able to explore the inside and we asked them to pull all of the seeds out and put them in bowls for us. We then estimated how many pumpkin seeds we have. Day four: The teachers counted the pumpkin seeds. We asked the children to help us solve the mystery of how many pumpkin seeds there are. We divided random amount of seeds into Ziploc baggies and sent them home and asked the children to count how many seeds were in their baggy and bring it back to school with their answer. That way we can add up all of their numbers and see our grand total. We will carve the second pumpkin and leave as a decoration for our Halloween party.
