Science Journal Activity
Materials: Journal, writing utensils, caterpillars to observe Directions: Teachers had the children predict how long it would take the caterpillars to turn into butterflies. - The children wrote down their predictions and then they drew the predictions in their science journals. The teachers scaffolded the child’s writing as needed. - Every day the children check the caterpillars and draw/write in their journals |
Write the Room
Materials: Clipboard, paper, writing utensils Directions: -Teachers provide the children with clipboards and the activity template. - The learning environment is set up to include the spring words. - The children go around the room and find the words. Once they find the word they write them on the sheet. - Teachers support the children in writing the words and celebrate with the child’s efforts to make letter formations |
Musical Chairs with Writing
Materials: Dry Erase Board, Markers, music to play Directions: Each chair will have a white board in front of their seat, and it will have a word or letter on it. The children will have the opportunity to walk around their small group table as the music is playing. Once the music stops the children will sit in the chair that is in front of them and they will have the opportunity to write the word or the letter that is on their whiteboard. |
Name Activity
Materials: Paper, writing utensils Directions: Teachers provide the children with the light bulb templates and have the children cut them out. - The light bulbs are glued to black paper in a “string of lights” pattern. - Once the “lights” are glued down the children write one letter in each light bulb to represent their first name |
Pete the Cat and His Many Groovy Buttons
Materials: Book (Pete the Cat and His Many Groovy Buttons), buttons, shirt cut out, die or dice Description of Activity: Read the book before the activity. After reading the book, play the game. Each child gets one shirt, and places ten buttons on top of their shirt. The goal of the game is for the child to remove all ten buttons. They will roll the dice and remove the number of buttons that corresponds with the number rolled. They then pass the dice to the next child, continuing in this manner, until one child has removed all ten buttons. |
Mitten Piece Counting
Materials: Glue Stick, Mitten shape, scrap square paper Description of Activity: Children select an amount of squares to glue on their mitten. After they glue the items on, children count the squares. A book can be made out of this. Each page would have the mitten with squares. At the bottom, this phrase would be written: _________'s mitten has ____ squares. |
Story Retell/Shared Writing
Materials Needed: Chart paper & marker Description of Activity-Use book from greeting time and ask students, “What happened in the beginning of the book? Middle? End?” Teacher leaves blank spaces for kids to fill in the missing letters in the title, author’s name, details, etc. |
Egg Writing
Materials: * Basket * Eggs (inside each egg put letters and or numbers) * Paper * Pencil Directions: Put letters or numbers inside each egg. Give the child a basket with eggs. Have students write what letter or number is inside the egg on the piece of paper. This activity can help with writing letters, letter sounds, and letter recognition, and fine motor (opening/closing the eggs). |
Letter Monster Munch
-There is a picture of a monster on a poster board. -Velcro allows child to open and close mouth. -This can also be used for transitions. -The teacher provided the name or sound of a letter. The child placed a letter in the monster's mouth. -The child can also look for letters in their name. |
Baking Soda & Vinegar
Materials: *Baking Soda *Vinegar *Eye droppers *Cookie Cutters *Spoons *Cups *Craft Trays Directions: Each child gets their own tray, cookie cutter, cup of baking soda, cup of vinegar, and eye dropper. Ask the students what they think will happen when you mix the two. Students will scoop the baking soda into the cookie cutter. Then, they will take the eye dropper into the vinegar and put it into the baking soda. |

Retelling of The Three Little Pigs
The children used props to retell the story of Three Little Pigs. The three houses were made from 1/2 gallon juice cartons using real sticks, real straw and paper with printed bricks, 3 beanie baby pigs, 1 stuffed animal wolf, a black cauldron for the pot. The children tore up red and yellow paper to make the fire for under the pot. |
Shopping
Materials for each child and teacher: *Basket, shopping bag, or other container large enough to hold about 20 small items *1 die Materials to share: Assortment of 5-6 types of small items such as plastic animals, buttons, keys, and beads arranged in a “store” setting Backup materials: Additional items to stock the store and an “open/closed” sign Description of activity: Arrange the bins of materials as a store (We set the bins on the carpet in our large group area). Model “going shopping”. Roll the die, point to and count the number of dots you roll (“I rolled a two, so I get to shop for two items”). Choose and count out two items and place them in your bag/container. Give each child a die and bag/container. Tell the children they can shop until the store is out of goods. When it is time for the store to close, work together and return the items to their regular storage places. |
